Privacy policy

Applies to the Chalkline desktop application, version 2.0.0. This website itself sets no cookies and loads nothing from third parties; the only thing it stores in your browser is your light/dark choice.

1. Summary

Chalkline is a desktop application with no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no automatic data upload. Everything you create stays on your computer unless you use the optional online AI assistant.

2. Data on your device

Boards may contain personal data if you write it there, for example pupils’ names. Avoid putting pupils’ personal data on boards you share or send to an AI.

3. Online AI assistant (optional, off by default)

If, and only if, you choose the online mode and ask the assistant something, Chalkline sends to the configured AI service: your request, the last few messages of the chat, and a description of the current board (object kinds and positions, function formulas, text written on the board, names of saved boards). Recipients are OpenRouter and the model provider it routes to (when you use your own key) or your school’s server (when you use a school proxy). Their policies govern what they do with the data. Nothing is sent in the offline Rules mode.

4. What we do not do

No telemetry, no automatically sent crash reports, no tracking, no sale of data. The application contacts no server except the AI endpoint you configured, and only when you use the AI.

5. Your rights

Because we do not hold your data, you exercise your rights directly: view, copy or delete your boards and settings in the folders above. Uninstalling the program and deleting those folders removes everything. If you received Chalkline from an organisation such as a school, that organisation is responsible for any further processing.

6. Children

Pupils do not use accounts in Chalkline. If pupils’ personal data is put on boards or sent to an AI service, the school as controller must have a legal basis, for example parental consent.

7. Security

The AI key is stored encrypted and never reaches the page; boards are written atomically with backups.

8. Changes

We will update this policy when the software starts to process data differently, for example when optional cloud sync is added, and we will say so in the changelog.

9. Contact

Operator and contact details will be published here before the service is promoted publicly.
